It is not just the money you lose. It is the rest, the respect, and the business you never get to build.

Underpricing feels safe. A lower number is easier to say out loud, easier for the client to accept, easier than the awkward pause after you name your worth. So you pick the safe number. And then you pay for it, with interest, for months.

The math nobody shows you

Say you undercharge by one hundred thousand naira on a job to avoid losing it. That is not a one hundred thousand naira loss. It is one hundred thousand you now have to earn again somewhere else, on top of your actual targets. It is the extra job you take because this one did not pay enough. It is the rest you do not get, because you are always chasing the gap your own pricing created.

A low price is not a discount you give the client. It is a debt you collect from yourself later.

The respect tax

Here is the part that stings. Clients often value the work at the price you set. Charge too little and some clients unconsciously treat the work as small: they change plans casually, pay late without worry, and refer you to people who also want it cheap. Your price is not just a number. It is a signal about how seriously to take you.

What to do instead

  1. Know your real cost first. Every expense, plus your time, plus a profit margin that is planned, not left over.
  2. Set your price from that number, not from what you are afraid the client will say.
  3. Practise saying it out loud, with a full stop after it. The price is X. Then stop talking. The silence is not your enemy.
  4. Be willing to lose the client who only wanted cheap. They were never going to be the client who grows your business.
Note

You are not raising prices to be greedy. You are pricing so the business survives, so you can rest, and so you are still here to serve clients in five years. That is not selfish. That is responsible.

The clients you actually want

Good pricing does not just protect your profit. It filters your clients. The right price gently sends away the ones who would have drained you, and quietly attracts the ones who were always going to value you. Peace is profitable. So is the right no.
